FOCUS AREAS
The work to help our New Neighbors thrive requires long term engagement and dedicated effort. RADC has been established to focus on this goal of assisting our new neighbors to achieve independence and success. Where the needs outweigh the capacity of RADC, we focus our attention on the most critical aspects of resettlement.
RADC has six primary focus areas in our work with Afghan refugees, known in the community as our “New Neighbors”. Where the needs outweigh the capacity of RADC, we focus our attention on the most critical aspects of resettlement including:
IMMIGRATION SUPPORT
Every New Neighbor must prove that they would face persecution in Afghanistan and apply for permanent resident status. This arduous process requires regular and legal expertise. RADC provides case management and translation to support this process in addition to offering financial assistance with legal and medical costs.
FAMILY REUNIFICATION
Some New Neighbors were forced to leave spouses and children behind. RADC works to rectify this as quickly as possible, providing case management, translation and covering related legal costs.
HOUSING & BASIC NEEDS
We help New Neighbors secure housing. Should housing challenges arise, we are able to provide translators or case management to communicate needs or challenges with landlords. In addition, our incredible volunteers find in-kind goods to furnish homes ensure all basic needs are met.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
We create opportunities for New Neighbors to engage with one another (e.g., sewing circle, dinners), with Welcome Families (regularly social engagement and support), and with the broader Muncie community (e.g., community sports, arts, religious activities). RADC supports New Neighbors as they apply for their drivers license, which increases independence and community engagement.
EMPLOYMENT & DEVELOPMENT
While many of our New Neighbors had established successful careers in Afghanistan, their transition to the U.S. requires a fresh start. RADC works with local businesses to identify career training, job opportunities, provide translation during onboarding, and to advocate for any special accommodations or training needed.
EDUCATION
(PRE-K to ADULT)
From early childhood to adulthood, opportunities for education are critical to a successful transition into the U.S. We work with local schools and adult education programs to open opportunities for New Neighbors to continue their educational careers in the U.S. and also maintain an emphasis on women’s empowerment.
